Sarasota Memorial recognized two physicians for their outstanding years of service to the hospital and community. Pulmonologist and Critical Care Specialist Bruce Fleegler, MD, received the 2013 Lifetime Achievement award, and OB-GYN Specialist Kyle Garner, MD was named 2013 Physician of the Year.

Dr. Fleegler joined Sarasota Lung Associates and Sarasota Memorial’s medical staff in 1976. He served as the hospital’s chief of staff from 1997 to 1998 and chief of medical office from 2003 to 2005. During his time at Sarasota Memorial, Fleegler has helped develop the hospital’s emergency- and critical-care protocols for resuscitative hypothermia following cardiac arrest and introduced new and experimental treatment for patients with serious respiratory conditions.

Dr. Garner has trained in both family medicine and obstetrics and gynecology. He joined Sarasota Memorial’s medical staff in 2006 and 2012 was appointed chair of the OB/GYN Department. As a strong supporter creating a natural and safe childbirth experience, Garner has led several patient safety initiatives.

Both Fleegler and Garner were selected by a committee of physician leaders and honored at Sarasota Memorials’ annual medical staff meeting Oct. 29.
