County Commission to consider pet ordinance

The process of buying certain pets could soon change significantly for Sarasota County residents.

Sarasota County commissioners will discuss the draft of an ordinance banning the sale of commercially bred dogs, cats and rabbits at regular meeting Tuesday, Dec. 10. The new regulations would affect Puppy Town on South Tamiami Trail and Petland, located on Fruitville Road.

Animal-rights advocacy group Sarasota in Defense of Animals led the push for the ordinance. Proponents claim the ordinance will prevent area pet retailers from buying pets from out-of-state breeders who they say maintain unacceptable standards of care for the animals

Local pet-store owners say the ban unfairly demonizes the industry.

“This business is my life, and I am committed to the health and welfare of all my puppies,” said Puppy Town owner William Roland during a Nov. 19 commission meeting. “I strive to have the highest quality and healthiest puppies anywhere. I would not be in business if I did not.”

During the Dec. 10 meeting, commissioners will decide whether to advertise for a public hearing at a future date for the proposed ordinance.

Commissioners first heard arguments on the issue in late 2012.

• A staff report on the complaints from neighborhoods surrounding Bob's Boathouse
• Discussion about transferring certain county-owned roads to the city of Venice
• The appointment of one member of the Tourist Development Council
