+ Mote Marine adds new solar energy system
Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium has mounted a 2,310-square-foot, 30.2-kilowatt solar-power system on the southern roof of Mote’s Ann and Alfred Goldstein Marine Mammal Research and Rehabilitation Center to capture solar energy and supplement electrical power in the facility.

The $115,000 system was donated by Willis A. Smith Construction Inc. and installed by RegionSolar.

A second 30.2-kilowatt system was donated by Jim Lampl, a local solar energy supporter, to supplement power at Mote’s Aquaculture Park.

+ Joint commission meeting scheduled
The Longboat Key Town Commission and Sarasota Board of County Commissioners will hold a joint meeting at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at the Sarasota County Administration Center, 1660 Ringling Blvd.

The agenda has not yet been finalized, but proposed topics include park development, transit issues, New Pass maintenance dredging, tourist development tax allocation, beach management, shared services and Longboat Key’s tourist development tax allocation formula.

+ Publix continues to nail new store
If construction continues on schedule, the island could be just about three months away from the opening of its new Publix.

Contractors worked this week to construct a hip-roof near the entrance of the new store — i.e. the flat, pyramid shaped roof with four faces slanting downward. They are also continuing to put up a parapet around the roof, which is covered by yellow sheathing.

Perforated drainage pipes were stacked late last week at the southwest corner of the construction site, near the new CVS.

Fill dirt, which will be used for site elevation and for foundation work, is currently piling up at the site of the old CVS in preparation for the construction of parking spaces.
