+ Big Ben in Bradenton
Guests at State College of Florida’s second annual Avenue Des Artistes this Saturday, Feb. 20, will stroll the streets of Florence, Madrid and London. Each avenue displays student artwork, and everything is for sale. Event chairwoman Pam Bell Swain says, “I am most proud that the focus is entirely on the accomplishments of the SCF students. All proceeds go directly to the student artists, bringing their experience full circle from conception to sale.” The evening also features student musicians, themed bars and dinner by Chef Paul Mattison. It all takes place at the SCF Bradenton campus at 6 p.m. and the ticket is $150. More information and reservations (until Friday morning, Feb. 19) at 752-5398.
+ Sisterhood goes Hollywood
The Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood went all out for its annual “Sophisticated Ladies Go Hollywood Luncheon” on Feb. 10, dedicating it to the memory of the late Honey Salzman, who created the event eight years ago. The sell-out crowd of 220 guests included all four of Salzman’s children: Susan Salzman, Diane Shane, Jack Salzman and Robbie Salzman, who said: “She would have loved this. This was one of her joys to organize this event. She even thought of this theme last year.” There was a lot going on, including a Chinese auction, a silent auction and a fashion show by Foxy Lady with hair and makeup by Ana Molinari and staff. Models were Susan Weintraub, Adele Tannenbaum, Donna Newman, Valerie Joels, Montana Taplinger, Dana Corn, Betty Rosenthal and Leone Levy. Judy Bronstein auctioned off a gold and diamond pendant donated by Armel Jewelers. Event chairwoman Sue Rosin even persuaded Fred Bloom and Larry Lerner to don their tuxedos midday to sell auction and door prize chances.
+ New and notable ... St. Jude to make Sarasota debut … Sarasota is one of 13 communities across the country – and the only one in Florida – to participate in the multi-city “Foodlosophy” series, benefiting St. Jude, one of the world’s premier pediatric-cancer-research centers. The name comes from the concepts that the organization’s culinary operations team has developed to encourage young patients to eat. Ashley Thomas, Jennifer Rust and Montana Taplinger co-chair the food-centered event assisted by a stellar committee: Assunta Swier, Beverly Bartner, Diana Buchanan, Erin Hart, Fondren Watts, Kelly Causey. Kelsey Alholm, Lauren Blomster, Lulu Krysz, Meghan Buchanan, Nikki Sedacca, Sarah Lodge, and Tatyana Sharoubim. Party is at 6 p.m. Feb. 26, at Michael’s on East; tickets are $200. Co-chairs Donna DeFant, Nancy Marciniak and Janet Walter are working with CAN Development Director and party-planner extraordinaire Scott George on this one. Red carpet is at 7 p.m.; the main event starts at 8 at the Players, 838 N. Tamiami Trail. + Tidbits … Double the fun … Ballroom dance entrepreneur and instructor Jim Helmich is throwing a party to celebrate the expansion of his Ballroom City, which has doubled in size to become the largest studio dance floor in Sarasota at 3100 square feet. Long-time Helmich student Gloria Moss will be there with all three daughters: Peggy, Marian and Judy along with Argentine tango devotee Wendy Feinstein and husband Jerry. It’s a freebie Feb. 28; ribbon cutting at 4 p.m., party follows, no reservations required. Ballroom City, 3801 Bee Ridge Road, east of Beneva Road.
