First-graders to the rescue

First-grade students at Goldie Feldman Academy chose the Wildlife Center of Venice as the beneficiary of their annual mitzvah (good act) project, following an inspirational visit Nov. 4 from Peg Magee, a volunteer at the center. In addition to discussing the center's wildlife rescue efforts, Magee brought a squirrel's nest to show to the children. The students asked numerous questions and also shared their own animal-rescue experiences. 'My daddy picked up a turtle that was on the road,' said one student. The students and their teachers, Jodi Behrenfeld and Ellen Cohen, spent the next six weeks collecting a variety of donations, from bleach to dog food, as well as monetary donations, in an effort to support the good work of the Wildlife Center of Venice.
