World's best flock to Ranch for annual Cricket Festival

More than a dozen teams from across the world gathered at the Sarasota International Cricket Club in Lakewood Ranch for the 17th International 6-a-side Cricket Festival Nov. 25-28. The teams were divided into three groups with two of three groups playing for the coveted Festival Shield. The winners of this year's tournament were Memorial Cricket Club and the Evergreens. Throughout the tournament, players and their families also enjoyed cocktails, luau and gala dinners, a finals day luncheon and souvenirs, among other festivities.

Festive event celebrates Italian culture and heritage

The tables were saturated in confetti, balloons spanned the room and guests couldn't turn off their excitement - Sarasota Italian Cultural Events, Inc., had transformed Michael's on East into little Italy for its 'Festa Siciliana' luncheon Wednesday, Feb. 9. Performers ranged from balloon crafting 'Juggles the Clown' (Jeff Lovett) to accordion player Mario DeLeon to Tarantella Dancers. In the past, proceeds have benefited Sarasota Opera, Ringling Museum and Big Brother Big Sister on the Gulfcoast.

The 82 year old plane also known as the 'Tin Goose' was one of the two airplanes that founded Eastern Airlines and led the way for commercial airplanes today. The EDC of Sarasota County held its annual meeting Friday, Sept. 21, at the Hyatt Regency. During the meeting, the EDC honored local businesses with its Legacy Awards. Jim Tollerton, owner and president of Professional Benefits in Sarasota, received the Clyde Nixon Business Leadership Award, and USF Sarasota-Manatee received the John J. Cox Community Partner of the Year Award. Guests also enjoyed a speech from Dale Brill, president of the Florida Chamber Foundation, who spoke of the changing nature of Florida's economy and what business must do to adapt.

Before lunch ladies purchased raffle tickets for prizes donated by members as well as community organizations. Mayor Suzanne Atwell attended the event and applauded the Sarasota Garden Club. 'Everything you do here at the Sarasota Garden Club is for Sarasota and you continue to give to the community.' Ladies modeled clothing from Dilliard's after lunch.
