The members of the Palm Island Neighborhood Association held their annual picnic in the newly renovated Elsie Blair Park Saturday, Feb. 25. The association recently received a grant from the Sarasota County Neighborhood Grant Program to renovate the park, which had become overgrown. Volunteers donated over 500 hours of work clearing overgrowth, adding pavers, creating flowerbeds, constructing new benches and a sign and adding decorative totem statues.

Sarasota Ballet Director Iain Webb and a roomful of friends of the Sarasota Ballet watched the students in the Summer Intensive program rehearse in the studio July 23. Webb led the young dancers from around the nation through routines, corrected them and made them smile for the audience. The young students impressed the Friends of Sarasota Ballet, who couldn't stop talking about the young talent at lunch on the mezzanine following the rehearsal.

Students wore Seuss-themed hats and visited with first-grade teacher Laurie Butler, who was dressed as The Cat in the Hat. Volunteers read Dr. Seuss' books to each class in honor of the rhyme smith's birthday.

For the second lecture of the Historical Society of Longboat Key's series, Kauser spoke about Historic Spanish Point. The lectures take place at Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design. Kauser is a docent and member of the speaker's bureau from the Historic Spanish Point Museum.
