Business alliance welcomes Orioles director

The Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance hosted its first Breakfast of Champions event of the year Feb. 9 at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. Members enjoyed a hearty breakfast buffet before learning about the Baltimore Orioles' upcoming Spring Training schedule and the renovation of Ed Smith Stadium from guest speaker Laura Williams, director of Florida operations for the Baltimore Orioles.

Booker Middle School Tornado Trot

The cold and rainy weather didn't dampen the spirits of Booker Middle School students as they participated in the school's Tornado Trot on Friday, Feb. 11. Students walked, jogged and even danced around the ¼ mile track from 7:30 a.m. until noon to raise money to buy picnic tables so they could eat their lunch outside.

The Lido Key Residents took over the Lido Beach Resort Bar on Thursday, Feb. 16 for a sunset happy hour. The social time was spent laughing with friends, getting to know other members and snacking on mozzarella sticks. And the view wasn't too shabby either! They had a great view of their neighborhood from up on the eighth floor.

Save Our Seabirds and The Old Salty Dog restaurant collaborated for a fundraising fish fry Saturday, Oct. 20. Funds from the event will benefit the Wild Bird Learning Center and the ongoing maintenance needs of the center. Guests enjoyed viewing all of the center's temporary and permanent bird residents, snacked on fish and enjoyed live music.

The Longboat Key Kiwanis Club awarded donations to several community groups at its weekly meeting, Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Longboat Key Club Tavern. Recipients included Children First, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee, and Child Protection Center. Funds came from the Gourmet Lawn Party last November.
