Cardinal Mooney High School hosted its 11th annual walkathon to raise money for All Children's Hospital Saturday Feb. 4. Students and families joined staff to walk for a cause. Eleven years ago, the high school lost several students to leukemia and decided to start this fundraising event to raise funds for research. The walkathon, which includes a dance-off, concession stands and field-day activities, was sponsored by Harmor Mobility, Sarasota Lanes, Petland and Tropicana.

Bacchus the Rascal's Starry Night Dinner was the kick-off to Bacchus on the Beach featuring the history of Bacchus, the god of wine. Bacchus, the god of wine, was a rascal who loved women, wine and adventure explains Jan Shrem, owner of Clos Pegase Winery. Shrem gave a presentation 'Bacchus the Rascal, a Bacchanalian History of Wine Seen through 4,000 years of Art,' at the Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design.

Cal Ripken crowns Little League Champs

Trophies and bragging rights were on the line Dec. 4, as dozens of little leaguers hit the diamond in the Cal Ripken Little League Baseball Championships. Champions were crowned in the Rookie, Minor and Major Divisions. In the Rookie Division, the Yankees defeated the Brewers 19-2 to cap off an undefeated season. The Red Sox defeated the Dodgers 9-6 in extra innings to capture the Minors Division championship. In the Majors Division, the Rays beat the Rangers 14-6.

Members and their guests enjoyed a lunch and silent auction before hitting the course at The Ritz-Carlton Member's Golf Club in Lakewood Ranch. A trophy was awarded to the winning team and the winner of the putting contest received a new putter valued at $100.

Students at Bashaw Elementary School showed off their jump roping skills and techniques during the school's annual Jump for Fun March 28. Fifth-grade students demonstrated a variety of tricks, including a line of fire, frogs and triple back flips, among numerous others, before the rest of the school joined in on the fun. The event served as the culmination of a fundraiser in which students raised $6,865.81 for the school's art, music and physical education programs.
