Athlete of the Week: Kevin Garza

Lakewood Ranch High School senior Kevin Garza earned kudos for his performance at the second Kiwanis Classic Mustang Duals at The Ranch wrestling tournament Jan. 7. Garza was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler for Lakewood with four pins in the first period. Overall, the Mustangs placed second, going 4-1 on the day with a 39-30 loss to Sarasota in the finals. Thirteen-year-old fullback Kyle Thoma hauled in two touchdown passes, rushed for an 80-yard touchdown, kicked three extra points and racked up more than 200 yards of total offense, leading the East Manatee Bulldogs Junior Midget team to 24-13 victory over the Palm Harbour Panthers in the opening round of the playoffs Oct. 29.
