Manatee Memorial Hospital earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an “A”, “B”, “C”, “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country using evidence-based measures of patient safety, focused exclusively on errors, accidents, injuries and infections.
“Earning an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects the unwavering commitment of the physicians, nurses and entire care team to delivering the highest standards of safe, quality care,” said Judy Young, Chief Nursing Officer. “Patient safety is at the core of everything we do, and this recognition reinforces our mission to protect and care for every patient who entrusts us with their health.
DRIVING REAL CHANGE IN PATIENT CARE
Medical errors and safety events remain a persistent challenge in hospitals across the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 1.5 million people visit emergency departments each year due to medical-related harm, resulting in nearly 500,000 annual hospitalizations. The National Institutes of Health estimate that adverse events affect millions of hospitalized patients each year, despite decades of improvement efforts.
MOVING HEALTHCARE FORWARD
The ongoing need for improvement is what makes Manatee Memorial Hospital’s first-ever “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group especially meaningful. Leapfrog is a nationally respected nonprofit that evaluates hospitals using more than 30 rigorous, publicly reported measures, including infection rates, medication safety systems, staffing practices and error prevention. For Manatee Memorial, the “A” is a clear indicator of progress on a demanding national scale – one that operates in real healthcare settings, not just on paper.

“An ‘A’ Grade is a strong sign that Manatee Memorial Hospital is deeply committed to protecting patients from harm,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We commend the leadership, Board, clinicians, staff and volunteers for the role each played in earning this distinction.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that claim more than 500 lives per day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
