A pedestrian pushing a bicycle across Lockwood Ridge Road was hit by a car and killed early Monday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The 56-year-old man had not yet been publicly identified Monday morning, pending family notification.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office assisted FHP with the incident, which took place near Gocio Road around 1 a.m. The road was closed for hours though reopened before sunrise.

The FHP said the man had been standing in a painted median on Lockwood Ridge and began to cross while pushing a bike. A southbound vehicle hit him. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
