As All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church winds down from its big annual New to You art sale, the church has invited iconography artist Christine Hales to return for a gallery exhibition in its halls.

Hales specializes in the storied art form, which utilizes the shine of gold leaf and rich pigments to give a sacred illumination to significant religious scenes and figures.

The exhibition opened March 1 and will be available for public viewing through April 30.

This newest display, titled "Making Past Present: Icons and Windows into Eternity," prominently features a 12-part series on "The Stations of the Cross," centering on the crucifixion of Jesus.

Hales said she hopes to bring together stories from the past and present spiritual reality with her display.

She poses the question to viewers, "What were [the other saints] feeling or experiencing while they either participated or faithfully waited for the Passion to occur?"

Hales is an expert in this art form, which traces its roots to as early as the 16th century.
