Mote Marine has established a longstanding legacy in coming to the aid of Florida's aquatic wildlife, from sharks to sea turtles to manatees. Now, following the organization's move of its public facilities from City Island, the original building is focusing its efforts on animal rehabilitation and rescue.

While sea turtles continue to be a major focus of those efforts, Mote is adding a new program.

Experts are coming to the aid of a highly endangered animal: the goldfish. Known for their brilliant metallic shine, bulging eyes and incredible memory, they come with a unique challenge: their struggle to thrive in captivity under certain circumstances.

These often include environments that involve busy parents and forgetful children.

Renowned specialist Dr. Finnegan Flounders outlined the problem. "Goldfish face pressing threats in this dangerous habitats that involve lack of food, unsanitary swimming conditions and even curious house cats," said Flounders. "We get that these situations start innocently enough, but unfortunately, we're witnessing too many 'burials at sea.'"

Rehabbers have dedicated one of the facility's 1,000-gallon tanks to the cause, and will be actively looking to rescue goldfish from dangerous habitats.

For those who drop off a goldfish to the program, they will receive updates on the health of the animal during its rehab.

"We're trying to remove the stigma of shame that may surround surrendering one of these animals," Flounders said.

To report a goldfish in need of rescue or support the new program, call 941-366-3468.
