Although the host Braden River High volleyball team eventually lost a five-set thriller to Venice Sept. 25, the match showcased the Pirates' exceptional freshman outside/middle hitter Molly Lynch. Lynch tied senior opposite/outside hitter Chloe Pogoda with a team-high 12 kills in the match, and posted 12 digs to complement four aces on 20 service points. Lynch is the East County Athlete of the Week.

When and why did you start playing volleyball?

I started when I was 7 or 8. My parents used to do it and it seemed like a fun sport and I wanted to give it a try. I fell in love with it. It's so competitive and fun.

What do you love about playing on this team?

My teammates. They're so friendly and open, and it just changes how you can play on a court if you get along with everybody.

What are your goals for your freshman season with Braden River?

To improve on hitting, and to improve footwork to get faster. And get on the ball.

What's been the highlight of your season so far?

Competing. Being able to play with these people — seniors ... it's (a) once in a lifetime (opportunity).

What's something you've been working on recently to improve your game?

Footwork — getting faster, running. Doing ladder (drills), jump-roping. Trying to get faster and quicker.

What's one quote, if any, that you live your life by?

"Work hard."

if you could meet any professional or college athlete, who would you meet and why?

(Nebraska junior outside hitter) Harper Murray, because she's who I want to be. She's so good, so talented. I just want to be on Nebraska and be like her.

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?

Europe, because it's old and fun, and just something different.

If you were stuck on a desert island with only one item, what would you bring and why?

A hatchet. You can cut stuff.

What's your favorite TV show?

Ginny & Georgia.

What's your favorite meal?

Beans, rice, corn and sausage all mixed together.

What's your go-to, pre-match hype music?

I don't really listen to music, honestly. I just listen to whatever is on here (at the Braden River High School gym).

Finish this sentence. Molly Lynch is...

Funny and kind.
