Roadway safety enhancements for St. Armands Circle by the Florida Department of Transportation are scheduled to get under way in January.

Work to replace eight existing modular speed humps along State Road 789, also known as John Ringling Boulevard, with asphalt speed tables is expected to begin Jan. 13, weather permitting. Operations will take place during the nighttime hours to minimize effects on motorists.

“These new asphalt speed tables will help slow vehicles and create a more comfortable and predictable environment for everyone traveling through the St. Armands area,” said FDOT District One Director of Transportation Operations John Kubler in a news release. “Safety is always our top priority, and performing this work at night helps us deliver these improvements while minimizing disruption to residents, businesses and visitors.”

During first night of work on Jan. 13, crews will remove the eight existing speed humps and resurface those areas for a smooth, even roadway. The asphalt speed tables will then be placed as part of the same nighttime operation.

That will be followed by a 10-day cure period, during which no new construction will take place other than maintaining temporary markings. Following the curing period, crews will install the final pavement markings.

Depending on weather, the entire process will take approximately 12 days to complete. Any severely cold temperatures or rain may delay asphalt placement.

During any overnight work lane closures will occur between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.
