Evan Bolick is a football defensive end and a wrestler at Lakewood Ranch High. Bolick committed to the Ave Maria University football team Jan. 14. Bolick had 54 tackles (nine tackles for loss) and three sacks in 2023. Bolick also holds a 21-3 wrestling record in the 215-pound weight class as of Jan. 15.

When did you start playing football?

When I was 7 years old I started playing at the (Lakewood Ranch) YMCA. My dad (David Bolick) put me into it. It took me a while to warm up to it. I was scared of contact. But I kept on playing.

What is the appeal to you?

The grind of it and seeing myself improve. I wanted to keep getting better until I was the best. My teammates helped me love the game as well.

What is your favorite memory?

Back in 2018 my East Manatee Bulldogs youth team won our regional championship and then got to play Team Panama at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando. We actually lost to Panama — they ran they ball every single play — but it was a cool experience being there and getting to do that.

What is your best skill?

My strength. I've just always had that ability to overpower people. It is what helps me in wrestling as well.

What have you been working to improve?

My speed. Every Sunday I work with my trainer (Trevor Vance) to get faster. I want to be a combination of strength and speed. You can't just be all muscles and have success at the next level.

What led to you try wrestling?

A lot of my football teammates had tried it to help with their football conditioning. That convinced me to try it as well, during my junior year. I was not sure if I liked it at first, but I was pretty good at it. I made the varsity roster, so I stuck with it.

Where have you improved most this wrestling season?

My technique. I used to rely on my power and try picking people up. This year I have been doing a lot more observing and working outside of practice, learning different techniques to score. It has made a big difference.

What is your favorite food?

Chicken and rice. It's for the bulk. I eat a lot of it.

What is your favorite TV show?

"Reacher." I don't know if it is a (technically) perfect show, but I like it a lot.

What is your favorite school subject?

Right now I am enjoying my financial algebra class a lot. I have a great teacher (Rennie Finck).

Which superpower would you pick?

I want super strength like the Hulk. That would be helpful.

What is the best advice you have received?

Be ready to put in the necessary work. Be ready to go above and beyond what is asked of you.

Finish this sentence: "Evan Bolick is … "

Hard-working.
