Sixth grader Maya Gilkison could have gone home right after school to celebrate her birthday Feb.13. Instead, she stayed late, tagging along with friends to Dr. Mona Jain Middle School’s first Valentine’s Dance, held in the school cafeteria.

After dancing for awhile, Gilkison received a piggyback ride across the cafeteria from friend Caitlin Conley, who celebrated her birthday one day later, Feb. 14.

“It’s pretty cool,” Gilkison said of having a dance on her birthday. “I can sort of say the school had a birthday party for me.”

The girls joined about 200 classmates for the event, hosted by the school’s Parent Teacher Organization. Students enjoyed socializing, dancing and pizza.
