Police Department releases report on accidents involving bicycles

So far, there have been three accidents involving bicycles on Longboat Key in 2017, according to the Longboat

The Longboat Key Police Department has released a report regarding the frequency and severity of accidents involving bicycles on the island since 2011.

The report comes after a male bicyclist suffered severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle near the 2200 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive last month.

According to the report, there has been a total of 22 accidents involving bicycles since 2011, with three occurring this year.

With five, 2016 had the most accidents involving bicycles out of any year in the report.

The injuries suffered in last month’s accident on GMD were more severe than any other accident involving a bicycle on the Key in the past six years.

No injuries were reported in a total of eight accidents. 

According to report compiled by Longboat resident Lenny Landau in 2011, there were 25 total accidents involving bicycles between January 2007 and February 2011.

There are a total of 3 accidents this year to date involving bicycles.

2 with injuries and EMS was called to transport, one of which had severe injuries

1 that involved no injuries

2016

There were a total of 5 accidents involving bicycles

  • 3 with injuries (abrasions), all of which were minor but did require EMS to transport for treatment
  • 2 that involved no injuries
     
2015

There were a total of 3 accidents involving bicycles

  • 2 with injuries (abrasions and lacerations), all of which were minor but did require EMS to transport for treatment
  • 1 involving no injuries
2014

There were a total of 3 accidents involving bicycles

  • 2 with minor injuries (abrasions), one of which was transported by EMS for treatment
  • 1 involving no injuries
2013

There were a total of 4 accidents involving bicycles

  • 2 with minor injuries (lacerations and abrasions), one of which was transported by EMS for treatment
  • 2 involving no injuries
2012

There were a total of 2 accidents involving bicycles

  • 1 with minor injuries (abrasions) that was transported by EMS
  • 1 involving no injuries
2011
  • There were a total of 2 accidents involving bicycles
  • Both were with minor injuries (abrasions and lacerations), one of which was transported by EMS for treatment
