Jaimie Gilmore was living life in reverse when she read her original storybook to William H. Bashaw Elementary kindergarteners.
Now a senior at Lakewood Ranch High School, Gilmore once attended Bashaw and remembers when high schoolers visited her classes to read their stories.Â
"I remember it, and now actually doing it is cool," she said. "I love kids, so it was such an enjoyment."
Gilmore and her advanced English classmates visited Bashaw Friday, May 13, for a 30-year tradition, Winnie the Pooh and Shakespeare, Too. High schoolers write original stories that incorporate elementary curriculum — such as counting or measuring — or stories with life lessons and then share them with younger students. Gilmore's book, "No, Beau, No," was actually based on the behaviors of her older brother. He was always not doing what his mom told him to do, she said. Linda Schneider, a kindergarten teacher at Bashaw, laughed when she saw the title of the book. Beau Gilmore had been one of her students.Â
Maddie Biggs, also a Bashaw alumna, reads her story "Jacob's First Day Jitters."
Jaimie Gilmore and Jessica Hernandez read "No, Beau, No!" to Shanice Cerisier and Kemeci Coleman.
Bashaw students made a banner for Lakewood Ranch High School students. When word went over the intercom that the seniors had arrived, kindergarteners in Linda Schneider's class excitedly jumped up, saying "they're here! They're here!"
The reading day was also character day during Bashaw's spirit week, and Kate Zhou dressed up like a princess.

Mindee Biggs teaches at Bashaw, and her daughter, Maddie, used to attend the elementary.
Tia Copeland finishes her story about a bee.
Nicholas Mason colors a fish, an activity some of the seniors planned to go with their story.
Kaitlyn Alvarez plays a game with Lilly Achille and Vincent Charette.
Brittany Kluen, Jessica Martinez and Julio Martinez read a Christmas-themed story.
Joseph Capozzi created a story about taking a trip to the zoo.
