Mustangs topple rival Pirates in district play

The Lakewood Ranch High boys basketball team beat Braden River 74-51 Jan. 5.

The Lakewood Ranch High boys basketball team is the team to beat heading into the second half of the regular season after dismantling rival Braden River 74-51 in a Class 7A-District 11 contest Jan. 5. 

With the win, the Mustangs improved to 12-4 on the season and more importantly 4-0 in district play. 

Lakewood's Sam Hester led all scorers with 17 points. Blauvelt Georges added 14 points and Damien Gordon and Devin Twenty chipped in with 11 points apiece. Brock Sisson finished with nine points. Sisson also led the team in steals with six, as the Mustangs forced 28 turnovers. 

Jamal Owens led the way for Braden River (7-7, 1-3) with 11 points. Daniel Tart added 10 points and Tyler Dyson hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds. 

The Mustangs return to district action Jan. 8 versus Sarasota.
