Before the friendly competition could start, those participating in the 17th annual Observer Challenge Tennis Tournament had some important business to take care of.

Players and guests enjoyed a cocktail party catered by Harry’s Continental Kitchens at the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center on Dec. 8 where they watched an exhibition game, learned their tournament schedules and met their fellow competitors.

More than 100 people will be competing in the tournament this weekend. Games begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 9. Games will be played from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Dec. 10, and finals will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Dec. 11.
