Garden Club blooms at annual meeting

The Longboat Key Garden Club hosted its annual meeting and luncheon April 19, at Joan Durante Park.

The Longboat Key Garden Club hosted its annual meeting and luncheon April 19, at Joan Durante Park.

At the meeting, officers spoke about the club and its work and presented various awards, including $24,000 in scholarship money to six students and $15,000 in grants to nine local organizations.

Scholarship recipients:

The Garden Club awarded six $4,000 scholarships to local students. Each student is pursuing a career in an environmental-related field.

  • Manatee County Girls’ Club “Just for Girls”: $1,000
  • Friends of DeSoto National Memorial: $1,000
  • Florida Maritime Museum: $1,000
  • Boys and Girls Clubs of Manatee County: $1,000
  • Marie Selby Botanical Gardens: $1,500
  • Save Our Seabirds: $2,000
  • Sarasota Bay Watch at Bay Preserve: $2,000
  • Mote Marine Laboratory: $5,000
