The William H. Bashaw Elementary fourth-grade class performed an oral history of the state of Florida Thursday evening, April 30.

Florida facts

• State song: Old Folks at Home • State flower: Orange Blossom • State animal: Manatee

It was the first year the fourth graders had transformed a core subject of the year—Florida history— into a program to educate parents, family and friends about their studies.

The students performed several songs, including “Old Folks at Home,” the state song, and “Swing Low, Sweet Manatee,” which illustrated the state animal, the manatee.

Carly Sauerbeck, one of the fourth-grade teachers, said the students had spent the last three weeks preparing for the program.
