ValuePenguin, a personal finance research website, listed Longboat Key as the seventh safest city in Florida.
The research gathered statistics from 224 cities that ranged in size from small cities with fewer than 20,000 people, midsize cities with 20,000 to 45,000 people, and big cities with more than 45,000 people. Longboat Key is the fifth safest city in the small city category.
The methodology to determine the data was from 2013 FBI crime statistics, which included violent crimes and property crimes.
Longboat Key had 28 violent crimes per 100,000 and 1,745 property crimes per 100,000. The city’s overall crime score was 200.
The safest city in Florida is Indian River Shores, with a crime score of 73, and the least safe city is Opa Locka, with a crime score of 3,831. The state average crime score is 935.
Sarasota is number 192 on the list and has a crime score of 1,735.
