+ Police officers earn Life Saving Award
Longboat Key Police Officers John Majka and Shawn Nagel received a Life Saving award Monday night at Town Hall from Mayor Jim Brown for their efforts in saving a woman who almost drown in Sarasota Bay.

On July 2, near the area of Moore’s Stonecrab Restaurant, a 67-year-old woman walked into grass flats that were in deeper water when her boat’s motor broke down. She called out for help before her head went under water, explaining to police that she can’t swim.

Majka quickly jumped into the bay to rescue the woman.

“Because of the quick actions of Officers Majka and Nagell, no medical attention was necessary,” wrote Deputy Police Chief Frank Rubino in a July 2 email to Town Manager Dave Bullock.

+ Rotary Club plans Veterans Day parade
The Rotary Club of Longboat has organized a second parade for an island that’s used to just one parade on Bay Isles Road on Independence Day.

The Longboat Key Town Commission approved the temporary closure of Bay Isles Road between 4 and 5 p.m. Nov. 11 for a Veterans Day parade.

The event will feature a brief parade that will end at Temple Beth Israel for a memorial service to honor Longboat Key U.S. veterans and their families.

+ Commission agrees to extra beach costs
Town Manager Dave Bullock informed the Longboat Key Town Commission that the West Coast inland Navigation District asked the town to consider reimbursing the district for an extra $34,715 in unanticipated beach monitoring costs involved with a summer beach project that brought 100,000 cubic yards of sand to the north end.

Bullock recommended the town pay for half of that cost, for a total extra town cost of $17,358. The town already spent $400,000 toward the project, while WCIND originally allocated $500,000.

When Commissioner Phill Younger asked if the gesture would really go a long way toward an enhanced working relationship in the future, Bullock said, “If I didn’t think that was the case, I wouldn’t recommend this.”

The expenditure was approved unanimously by commissioners.
