+ Town hires new planner
Maika Arnold will join the Longboat Key Planning Zoning and Building Department staff as a town planner Dec. 1.

Arnold holds a bachelor’s degree in women’s, gender and sexuality studies and Spanish and a master’s of community planning, all from the University of Cincinnati. She most recently served as the only city planner in Vandalia, Ohio.

Arnold will earn an annual salary of $61,339.

+ Key Club manager seeks Sunday morning alcohol sales
Resort at Longboat Key Club General Manager Jeff Mayers asked the Longboat Key Town Commission in a Nov. 12 email to consider lifting the current ban of alcohol sales before noon on Sundays.

Sarasota County recently lifted its ban on alcohol sales before noon on Sundays, but the ban remains in effect in the town and city of Sarasota.

Town Manager Dave Bullock forwarded Mayers’ request to the commission.

+ Sarasota Bay Fishing Forum seeks local anglers
The Sarasota Bay Fisheries Forum, a partnership between Mote Marine Laboratory and the University of Florida, is seeking Sarasota Bay anglers to give input at its first meeting.

Scheduled for 6 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 20, on the third floor of Mote’s Keating Marine Education Center, 1599 Ken Thompson Parkway, the meeting will begin with an overview, followed by work in small groups to brainstorm issues affecting local fisheries.

RSVP to Paula Clark at 388-4441, Ext. 691 or [email protected].

+ Scheduling error results in no underground utilities video
The cameras weren’t rolling when the Longboat Key Town Commission held its underground utilities special meeting, followed by its regular workshop Nov. 12.

That’s because the town’s video company marked the wrong date on its calendar. Typically, the workshop takes place on the third Monday of each month, however, the workshop took place on the second Wednesday in November.

Audio of both the meeting and the workshop is available on the town’s website, longboatkey.org, on the Town Commission section of “Agendas & minutes.”

+ Correction
The Longboat Key Club’s Islandside property has a maximum density of 1,588 potential units, of which 845 have been built, leaving the possibility for another 743 units.
The Nov. 20 issue of the Longboat Observer incorrectly stated the number of potential and existing units.
