During the first half of the month, the Sarasota Police Department placed an emphasis on enforcing seat belt laws, issuing 448 citations in the process.

From March 1-15, the department participated in the Florida Department of Transportation’s spring Click It or Ticket campaign. The program is designed to remind people to wear their seat belts when traveling in a car, according to an SPD release.

“We want to bring these numbers down,” SPD Capt. Patrick Robinson said. “There are too many people dying on the road, and so many of those deaths could have been prevented if people took the simple step of buckling up.”

In addition to the 448 seat belt citations, SPD officers noted the following violations as part of the campaign:

• 83 speeding citations.
• 82 drivers with suspended licenses.
• 57 seat belt warnings.
• 47 uninsured motorists.
• 4 child safety seat citations.
