The neon hula hoops, wild costumes and upbeat party music from the Hoop Jam April 15 outside Regal Cinemas Hollywood 20 drew a large crowd. They even got the crowd pumped for that evening’s screening of “The Hooping Life,” a documentary featured in the Sarasota Film Festival, in which director Amy Goldstein explores the popular subculture of hoop dance.

The St. Petersburg-based Hula Monsters Dance Troupe hosted the demonstration, during which its members showed off their moves. The troupe also provided extra hoops for beginners.
