The Booker High School Key Club received recognition for book collection project it recently completed to help youths learn to read during the 2009 Global Youth Service Day and sponsored by Youth Engaged in Service.

The project was spearheaded by senior students Jamie McGonagill and Emily May, who both reported spending more than 30 hours a week on the effort since January. The project was deemed the winner because of its scope and impact.

“I’ve done nothing else since January,” said Jamie McGonagill.

The books were donated to the “Books for a Better World” organization, which helps to create and maintain libraries in rural communities in developing countries.
