Bike burglary
7:30 p.m. — 500 block of Spanish Drive South. Lost Property. A woman reported that she was missing two bicycles valued at $800.
Plop, plop … fizz, fizz
5:26 a.m. — 200 block of Sands Point Road. Public Service. Police confiscated a brown pouch with two white, small discs that a housekeeper thought could have been an illegal drug. The white discs tested negative for drugs several times. Could it have been a bad case of heartburn?
July 10
Line of communication
12:11 p.m. — 100 block of GMD. Disturbance. A Sarasota man called to report that two men on another boat had threatened him while he was fishing. A witness told police that the man’s fishing line came close to becoming tangled with the other fishermen’s lines, and words were exchanged. All parties agreed to separate and keep their lines away from each other.
Stolen bicycle
4:11 p.m. — 500 block of Norton Street. Larceny. A woman reported that someone stole her daughter’s pink mountain bike from her carport area. The bike was left unlocked.
July 11
Give them some credit
12:32 a.m. — 1600 block of GMD. Noise Disturbance. Hotel management reported noisy guests had charged room service to their room without having a credit card listed at the front desk. Police got the guests to settle down, and they paid the room-service bill.
Everything but the kitchen sink
10:09 a.m. — 500 block of Bay Isles Road. Civil Disturbance. A woman reported that she was considering quitting her job at a local restaurant and was worried the owner wouldn’t return the utensils, appliances, furniture and other restaurant items she said she loaned the owner. Police told the woman the only way they could get involved was if the matter escalated to the point that the utensils were used as weapons during a fight.
July 12
Escape artist
3:50 p.m. — Intersection of Bay Isles Parkway and GMD. Traffic Violation. Police attempted several times to pull over an 85-year-old woman for weaving on the road. Finally, she stopped her car in the middle of Bay Isles Parkway. The police officer initially took the woman’s car keys and then gave them back with explicit instructions to start the car so she could stay cool while a ticket was written.
But when the officer went to the police car to write the ticket, the woman sped off. Another police officer pulled his car in the middle of the road to force her to stop. She was issued a citation for evading police and poor driving and will have to retake her driver’s license exam. Her husband arrived to take her home.
Party animals warned
8:53 p.m. — 5600 block of GMD. Suspicious Circumstance. Police found the beach littered with firework debris and beer cans, while simultaneously smelling burning marijuana coming from a second floor balcony. The property manager was notified and guests were warned this area would receive extra patrol because of noise complaints and other violations.
July 13
Going home empty-handed
7:41 p.m. — City dock. Public Service. A man called to report several people spear fishing while drinking beers at the town dock. The subjects admitted to owning the alcohol and confessed they weren’t good fishermen while drinking. Police suggested they call it a day and issued them a warning.

Neighborhood watch
12:22 a.m. — 4200 block of GMD. Suspicious Person. A condominium owner reported a strange man going in and out of his neighbor’s unit. It turns out that strange man was actually the neighbor, who arrived in town late and startled the other condo owner.
