When the qualifying period closed at noon Monday, Nov. 21, Longboat Key had one new commissioner-elect, two contested commission races and one referendum, according to Town Clerk Trish Granger.

It’s possible another referendum will be placed on the ballot for the Colony Resort & Tennis Club. The commission will consider placing a Colony Resort density question on the March 14 ballot at its 7 p.m. meeting Dec. 5.

Candidate George Spoll was unopposed and will take term-limited Mayor Jack Duncan’s spot as District 2 commissioner.

Incumbent Commissioner Jack Daly will face challenger Larry Grossman for the District 4 seat in a reprise of the 2015 election.

Jim Brown and Gene Jaleski will vie to succeed term-limited at-large Commissioner Phill Younger.

The Longboat Key Town Commission approved placing the following referendum on the March 14 ballot: May the Town allow the property at 5630 Gulf of Mexico Drive and comprising 1.82 acres, to increase density from C-1 commercial uses (which allows no density) to R-6MX residential use (which allows a maximum of six residential units per acre), for a maximum total of 10 residential units on the property?
