State Street between Lemon Avenue and Pineapple Avenue in downtown Sarasota will close to vehicular traffic permanently starting Oct. 21. The road will close early Saturday morning for the Sarasota Farmers Market and will not reopen to vehicles.

The closure is part of a project approved by the city in 2006.  Originally called City Place at Pineapple Square, the development is now named The Mark, and will transition State Street between Lemon Avenue and Pineapple Avenue into a "pedestrian mall," according to a release from the Sarasota government.

The 12-level, 153-foot tall building includes 157 condominium units, 35,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and restaurant space as well as parking and 11,000 square feet of office space. Stakeholders broke ground on the project Aug. 9 with an expected completion by fall 2019.
