Key camps heat up for summer

Summer will soon be here, and for many local kids that means only one thing — it’s time for summer camp. Whether your little one is a sports fanatic, an aspiring scientist or an animal-lover, Longboat Key camps offer something for kids of all ages and a variety of interests.
 

Cedars Tennis Resort
Cedars Tennis Resort will be holding four one-week tennis clinics the weeks of May 23 through May 27, May 30 through June 3, June 27 through July 3, and July 6 through July 10. Children ages 5 through 13 are eligible to participate. Sessions begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon. Call Robbie Salum at 383-6426 for pricing and additional information.

Longboat Key Club and Resort
The Longboat Key Club and Resort will offer its fifth annual summer sports camps for kids. Summer Sports Camp is open to children ages 4 through 12 who want to learn the basics of golf, tennis, soccer and more. Weekly sessions run from June 6 through Aug. 12, with half-day sessions offered for children ages 4 to 5. Cost per session is $330 for members, $360 for non-members.

For kids wanting to focus on their skills at the net, Junior Tennis Camp will be held for children ages 8 through 17. Weeklong sessions begin June 6 and end Aug. 12. Cost per session is $500 for members, $540 for non-members.

Mote Marine Laboratory
Mote Marine Laboratory offers summer camps for children of all ages who are interested in learning about marine life and marine habitats.

“Mommy and Me at Mote” gives children the opportunity to learn about ocean life and explore coastal habitats with their favorite adult through songs, games and visits to Mote exhibits. Children ages 2 through 5 can participate and must be accompanied by an adult. Sessions begin June 14. Cost per three-day session is $125 for members, $135 for non-members.

Students entering grades one through four who are able to swim can attend “Aquakids: Senses of the Sea.” This year’s theme will explore how animals survive in the sea and will include snorkeling, visits to Mote Aquarium and a boat trip through Sarasota Bay. Five-day sessions begin June 6 and run through Aug. 12. Cost per session is $225 for members, $245 for non-members.

For students entering grades five through eight, Mote will offer “Sea Sleuths: Ocean Encounters.” In this hands-on program, campers will become marine scientists while they kayak, snorkel and collect marine life in Sarasota Bay. Five-day sessions begin June 13 and run through Aug. 12. Cost per session is $225 for members, $245 for non-members.
Students entering grades five through eight can also participate in Mote’s marine science, digital-media camp, “Digi Know How?” Five-day sessions begin June 6 and go through Aug. 12. Cost is $225 for members, $245 for non-members.

PADI/National Geographic Open Water Certification SCUBA Diving Camp is offered for students entering grades five through 12. Sessions will take place June 20 through June 24, July 4 through July 8, and July 18 through July 22. Cost is $430 for members, $450 for non- members.

Sarasota Sailing Squadron
The Sarasota Youth Sailing Program will hold summer camps at Sarasota Sailing Squadron. Five two-week sessions will take place beginning June 13 through Aug. 19.

Morning sessions will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, and afternoon sessions will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Sailors ages 5 and up can participate in the tadpoles program, and sailors ages 8 to 18 are eligible for the main program. All sailors must pass a swim test.
