East County resident celebrates 102nd birthday
In 1912, the Titanic sank, New Mexico became a state and the first female pilot flew across the English Channel.
It was also the year East County resident Ruth McBurney was born. August 12 marked her 102nd birthday.
She worked as a legal secretary and later worked as a police dispatcher. McBurney also ran an antique shop, and has lived in Florida for six years.
She spent the day surrounded by friends and family, such as her granddaughter, Louise Sarna.
"We have been blessed to be able to enjoy this time with her," Sarna said.
