A Sarasota nonprofit is hoping to cash in on a recent dance craze by putting a spin on the traditional walk-a-thon.

Cancer Support Community, formerly the Wellness Community, will hold a fundraising dance contest, called Dance 2 Live, for the entire Sarasota County area.

The event begins with individual businesses, schools, churches and other groups holding their own dance contests from Sept. 1 to February with their employees, students or members.

“For example, a business can do its dance contest during a quarterly meeting or a school can do it at a holiday party,” said Amy Paulishak, development director of Cancer Support Community.

Adult participants are asked to collect at least $100 in donations, and children are encouraged to collect a minimum of $25.

Each group then picks two winners, who then go on to complete in the final D2L event in February.

“The winners do not have to be based on dancing skill,” said Paulishak. “This isn’t ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ If it were based on skill, then I wouldn’t be able to take part.”
