Jamey Murphy and his wife, Jodi Mailman, co-own Create Your Own — A Confectionary Boutique. To celebrate Murphy’s 50th birthday, the two completed the New York City Marathon. Read more about him in our candid Q&A.

1. Animal kingdom. Jamey and his wife have four of his favorite kind of animal — the cat. “They are our children,” he says of Jazz, Jessie, Ebony, and Sadie, all of which were rescued. “I like their independence.

2. Diverse tastes. If you scrolled through Murphy’s iPod, you’d find a collection of music — everything from R&B to rap and even some country. “Rap is what gives me an extra push while running and working out,” he says.

3. Baker’s dozen. Murphy admits he has too many pairs of running shoes in his closet — 13 pairs of size 11 in total.

4. Baby of the family. Murphy grew up in the Finger Lakes region of western New York, as the youngest of three boys.

5. Choc-o-holic. Although Murphy’s sweet tooth isn’t as pronounced as his wife’s, he still loves dark chocolate-covered almonds, peanut butter cups and peanut M&M’s, he said. “Those are the things that keep me running fast,” he said.
