A woman already in prison on an unrelated conviction was charged this week in connection with a 2024 Sarasota homicide, a crime in which a 15-year-old was previously charged.

Sarasota Police detectives on Wednesday traveled to the Lowell Correctional Institution in Ocala to formally inform 21-year-old Laterryah Reed of the new charges against her. State inmate records show Reed arrived at Lowell in April, 2025 with an expected release date in 2027. She was convicted in 2025 on a single count of possession of a firearm, ammunition or a concealed weapon by a convicted felon.

Her arrest and that of Tujuan Byrd, 15, stem from a fatal shooting that took place in the May 16, 2024 in the 1800 block of 31st Street. A 28-year-old man was shot twice and died, police said. Byrd was arrested less than a week later. He has entered a not-guilty plea, court records show.

A continuing investigation by Sarasota Police identified a second suspect, and a warrant for Reed’s arrest was issued on Wednesday.
