The Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation held its annual gala March 6. The gala, which was followed by a performance by Idina Menzel, featured themes from her shows, including "Wicked."

Titled “Defying Expectations: An Evening in Three Acts,” the Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation gala featured opulent design combining two themes: the frozen fairyland of “Frozen” and the dark emerald land of “Wicked.” Both, of course, were chosen in honor of the guest performer, Tony-award winning singer Idina Menzel.
Together with their committee, co-chairs Melba Ramirez and Jim Matras hosted 350 guests March 6 under a tent on the grounds of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The finer details included huge balloons, an ice sculpture and human snowflakes, flowers and flying monkeys.
Requested attire was “creative black tie,” and some guests went the extra yards to fit into the decor. Many dressed in character with green gowns, and the winter wonderland was replete with Elsa-inspired dresses and long, braided wigs.
Act I began with a cocktail reception featuring spirits of the north, while Act II featured an enchanted emerald dinner with speakers including CEO Tania Castroverde Moskalenko talking about the power of the performing arts.
Jim and Susan Travers were honored with the Patron of the Arts Award for their continued dedication and support to the arts. Jim Travers’ eyes welled with tears as he spoke about his commitment to arts access, education and community impact and the importance of making meaningful arts experiences accessible to people of all ages across our region.
After enjoying dinner, guests were treated to Act III, a performance by Menzel, who sang favorites from her “Wicked,” “Rent” and “Frozen” roles as well as other classics.
And for those not ready to call it a night, the La Vie Bohème after-party provided the perfect nightcap in the Van Wezel foyer.
Proceeds from the gala support education and community engagement programs that reach more than 40,000 students, educators and families each year.
