The first Mixon Farms Market is due to open March 15 at the Bradenton facility purchased by Manatee County last summer

The farmers’ market-style event, planned to continue on the third Sundays of April and May, will resume for its first full season in September, again running monthly through May. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2525 27th St. East.

Fresh produce, specialty items and handmade goods will be on sale alongside live music and an Ag Adventure Day exhibit, featuring tractors, farming equipment and other agriculture displays. Visitors will also get a chance to see the grounds’ Gazebo and Grand Pavilion, where weddings and other events can be booked.

“Preserving local agriculture is essential to maintaining the character, economy and heritage of Manatee County,” said District 2 Commissioner Amanda Ballard. “The Mixon Farms Market not only supports our local farmers and small businesses, it also creates meaningful opportunities for residents to connect directly with the people who grow their food and sustain our agricultural traditions.

Manatee County commissioners voted unanimously July 29 to purchase the property for $13.5 million.

The approval came exactly two years after Mixon Fruit Farms' last day of business on July 29, 2023. The property was listed at $15.8 million in 2023.

Residents signed petitions supporting the sale, which included the 39-acre property, a pavilion, a 38,026-square-foot store and a 2,538-square-foot house. The store has been discussed as a potential site for a county library branch.
