Cold weather shelters open in Manatee, Sarasota counties for frigid spell

With frigid temperatures expected over the next week, Manatee County has announced, in partnerships with community organizations, that additional cold weather shelters will be open.

The Salvation Army will open at cold weather shelter at 1204 14th St W., Bradenton with check-in starting today at 6 p.m.

Under One Roof, 407 57th Ave. E., Bradenton, opens its shelter for women only at 2:45 p.m. today. Transportation to Under One Roof is available through Manatee County Area Transit beginning 2:30 p.m. today from Turning Points, 701 17th Ave. W., Bradenton.

Turning Points also will be open for those seeking shelter and coffee during the cold weather.

Residents are encouraged to spread the word to anyone who might need a warm, safe place during the low temperatures.

In Sarasota, The Salvation Army – Center of Hope, 1400 10th St., will conduct its cold weather operation plan tonight, Thursday, Jan. 15.


Dinner will be served from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Guests will need to leave campus afterward and may return at 7 p.m. for shelter entry. Guests must be checked in by 8:30 p.m. Showers will be available from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and all guests will be required to present a valid ID for identification at check-in. Breakfast will be provided to-go in the morning, and all guests will need to depart campus by 6 a.m.

Breeze Routes 2, 7, 8, or 99 operating on normal schedules will arrive within about two blocks of the Salvation Army on 10th Street.
