Inexperience has proved to be no obstacle for Gaby Bichanich. As a freshman, she's been a constant contributor for The Out-of-Door Academy girls basketball team. The guard has established herself as the team's leading scorer through its first nine contests. She's averaging 15.1 points per game and has shot 38% from the field. She posted 18 points in back-to-back games on Dec. 9 and 11. Bichanich is the East County Athlete of the Week.

When and why did you start playing basketball?

This is my fifth year playing, and I got into it because I just love the competition and being athletic and active.

After all these years, what's driven you to stick with the sport?

Definitely the competition. I love the feeling of, after a win, just going home and relaxing. It's fun.

What has been the highlight of your career so far and why was it so memorable?

Last season, when I was out injured, my team won the SSAA tournament without me. I got to cheer them on.

How would you describe your style of play to someone who's never seen you in action?

Aggressive and motivated.

What are your goals for your freshman season with ODA?

To have a clean slate. I just want to play well as a team and get some wins.

In recent practices, what has been your focus for developing your game?

Shooting is my No. 1 focus, as well as strength conditioning and lifting weights.

When you're not playing basketball, how do you spend your free time?

I like going to the beach, and I love going to the gym to get strong for the season.

What's one quote or piece of advice that you've always carried with you?

"Everything happens for a reason." I grew up with my parents saying it a lot, so it kind of just drove me.

If you could meet any professional athlete, who would it be and why?

Stephen Curry, because his shot is amazing.

What's something not many people know about you?

I'm really supportive on the court. I love to lift people up and lift the energy.

What's your favorite meal?

Pasta, especially Kraft macaroni and cheese.

What's your favorite movie or TV show?

High School Musical.

What would be your music of choice to help you get in the zone during practice or before a game?

Jon Pardi. If I had to pick one song of his, it would be Head Over Boots.

Finish this sentence. Gaby Bichanich is...

Supportive.
