On September 23, 2025, Aubrey Robertson and her husband John Paul, of Sarasota, welcomed their firstborn, Jonah, at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.

During pregnancy, they attended the hospital’s “Preparing for Birth” class. The instructor, also a doula, brought real-life insight to every session, Aubrey shares. The couple also received a tour of the hospital’s birthing suites.

“I felt like I was touring a spa,” says Aubrey. “Every private room has a bathroom with a shower designed for easing labor. You can request a birthing ball, adjust the lighting and play your own music. Food and drinks are available throughout the day, and I had plenty of space to store my popsicles and special drinks.”

Welcoming Her Baby

On delivery day, Aubrey arrived with her midwife, Kris. “We were greeted by the nurses with warmth and excitement,” says Aubrey.

“The nursing team worked seamlessly with Kris from the start. Nancy, one of the nurses, checked on me constantly. When my contractions started, I grabbed her hand for dear life and later told her I could not keep going. She was nothing but positive and encouraging — a true blessing,” shares Aubrey. Seven hours later, Aubrey’s healthy baby boy entered the world at 6.6 pounds and 19.5 inches.

Bonding & Recovery

The nurses guided the couple through diaper changes, feedings and newborn care and encouraged Aubrey to rest; they were also treated to a celebratory dinner. “We received so much personal attention that my husband did not want to leave,” Aubrey jokes. “Discharge felt bittersweet. I was heading to my home, but I also felt like I was leaving home.”

When Aubrey struggled with breastfeeding post-discharge, a lactation consultant from Lakewood Ranch Medical Center worked with her. Little Nippers, a support group for new parents who deliver at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, also helped Aubrey with breastfeeding suggestions.

“If I am ever blessed with pregnancy again, there is no question where I would have my baby,” says Aubrey.
