The Out-of-Door Academy's Andrew Carrillo, who transferred from Parrish Community before his senior year, has led the Thunder's boys soccer team to a 6-3 record to start the season. The senior midfielder/forward boasts a team-high nine goals though nine games. Carrillo is the East County Athlete of the Week.

When and why did you start playing soccer?

I was maybe 5 or 6 years old. My dad's (Juan Carrillo's) side always loved soccer in the family. So he just got me into it, and then I eventually developed my own love for the game.

Why have you stuck with the sport after all these years?

When I started off in soccer, it was a little bit of a rough start. Growing up, people were a lot bigger than me. I've put too much work in to just stop.

What's been the highlight of your career so far?

Most people would probably say a game-winner or something, but for me, I feel like it's meeting the (ODA players) for the first time. It's my senior year and my first time meeting a lot of these guys — hopefully we connect.

What's been the reason behind ODA's early success?

They had a successful season last year, so they still have that mindset. In practice, we've kept on reminding each other that we need to have a good season too. I came in, and I've loved the atmosphere, because I'm very serious about (soccer), so I like when other people are serious about it, too.

What's one quote or piece of advice that you've always carried with you?

Every time I'm on the field, I see my parents in the stands, and I just say, "I've got to do it for them."

If you could meet any professional athlete, who would you meet and why?

Right now, probably Ja Morant. Basketball is fun.

If you could go anywhere in the world right now for a dream vacation, where would you go and why?

Barcelona, Spain.

If you could have any superpower, what would you choose and why?

Mind control, so I can get good grades in all my classes.

What's your favorite meal?

Chicken Alfredo. I'll get at it Applebees or something like that. It's so good.

What's your favorite movie or TV show?

Friends. I named my cats after (Ross and Joey).

What's your go-to music to help get yourself in the zone before a game?

Daniel Caesar. When I tell people, they don't really think the same as me. He's a slow artist, some people say, but I like it.

Finish this sentence. Andrew Carrillo is...

Loved. Family is a big part of my life, and they always make me feel loved.
