Traffic cleared after fire, bridge malfunction in Sarasota, Longboat

Traffic on Tamiami Trail and Gulf of Mexico Drive has returned to normal. Fire crews working a commercial-building fire in the 1600 block of Tamiami Trail have cleared the scene, and the drawbridge malfunction on the north end of Longboat Key has been repaired.

Lunch-hour incidents in Longboat Key and Sarasota have snarled traffic on two major roadways today.

In Sarasota, a fire at a business in the 1600 block of South Tamiami Trail — near Sarasota Memorial Hospital — slowed traffic in both directions. Eleven fire-rescue units are on the scene of the fire, which was reported around 11:40 a.m.

In Longboat Key, the town said northbound delays of at least 30 minutes were likely on the north end of the barrier island as repair crews work to get the stuck drawbridge barrier arm of the Longboat Pass bridge back in working order. That advisory was posted about 12:10 p.m.
