Hapless romantic

5:45 p.m., 2000 block of Benjamin Franklin Drive

Harassment: Having concluded her shift with a cleaning service, a woman reported an employee of a contractor also working on the property had been making unwanted advances. Specifically, she said while in the laundry room the clumsy Casanova began asking if he could have a hug and a kiss. He also, she said, asked for her phone number and where she lived.

The complainant further advised, on Oct. 11, the relentless Romeo told her that she was very pretty and he wished to go out with her. Additional questions included what time she came into work and what time she got off. Obviously not schooled in the fine art of wooing, he suggested that they go out to dinner and then have sex or, short of that, just have sex in the laundry room, the hum of the tumbling sheets and beach towels perhaps a steamy, sultry backdrop.

She did not immediately report the encounter, but on Oct. 12 alerted her supervisor after discovering her earbuds were missing from her purse, which had been left unattended. The supervisor told her to take the next day off, and when she returned on Oct. 14 was told the man was no longer permitted to work at the property. She was also informed the subject was a sex offender on probation for sexual battery with a minor. Attempts to contact the subject’s probation officer to report his behavior as of Nov. 21 were unsuccessful.

Disturbing the pose

5:42 p.m., 400 block of Sapphire Drive

Disturbance: The latest episode in a long-running dispute between a yoga instructor who holds classes in Sapphire Park and a nearby residence resurfaced when the complainant — the neighbor who lives near the park — told a responding officer she was being harassed by the instructor.

She claimed that as the yogi drives toward the park she would shout slurs in her direction such as “pedophile” or “dumb idiot.” While the veracity of neither moniker cannot be ascertained by the incident report, the complainant said the altercations have been ongoing for several months, and are only increasing in frequency as the instructor holds more classes in the park. She further insisted the instructor yelled at her again in front of a 30-student class, and she was no longer accepting the slurs and was calling law enforcement.

The classes, she added, are excessive in size for the community standard.

The officer then went to the park where the yoga class was still in session, consisting of only five students and the instructor. She said she was not surprised the complainant called law enforcement, claiming the woman walked across the street with her dog shouting, "She calls me a pedophile! She calls me a pedophile in front of everyone,” according to the report.

The yogi denied the accusation, advising the complainant regularly disturbs her yoga classes. She said he had been hired by the homeowners association to teach residents and, although she is no longer paid for her services, continues to teach the class on a voluntary basis.

She declined to file a complaint, stating the two combatants are already embroiled in a court case over a separate “church incident,” the nature of which was not specified. Further, Sapphire Park allows classes that do not surpass an “excessive” number of students, a threshold not met by a group of five per the officer’s judgment. No further action was taken.

Mystery date goes wrong

9:02 a.m., 1900 block of Main Street

Civil dispute: As it turns out, meeting a date online, giving her your credit card number, driving to Kissimmee to meet her, bringing her back to Sarasota with a surprise plus-one, putting them up in three short-term vacation rental properties and then letting them move in is not a demonstration of sound judgment.

A Sarasota man learned that otherwise obvious lesson the hard way and called law enforcement to have the woman removed from his apartment. He said he met the woman on the seeking.com dating app on Oct. 17, and prior to picking her up in Kissimmee on Nov. 4, the two corresponded daily via text. During that time, he sent her cash, groceries and, inexplicably, a photo of his credit card for her personal use.

When he met the woman in person at the Kissimmee address, the complainant found her in the company of a minor whom she identified as her daughter, as well as someone who turned out to be a babysitter. This turn of events unexpected, he offered to pay the sitter $400 in cash to watch the child for the evening to spend time alone with his newfound lady friend. Shortly after, though, the child called the woman and wanted her to return. The sitter also refused to refund any of the cash she collected for the evening’s work.

Smitten still, the man drove the mother and child back to Sarasota and set them up in a short-term rental on Nov. 7, and then a second location on Nov. 8. During that time, the complainant found the woman in the company of someone she told him was her cousin, identified only as “Tony.” Finally, after staying at a third short-term rental, he invited the mother and child to stay at his apartment.

Finally coming to the sober realization the woman may, just may, be taking advantage of him and had no intention of leaving the apartment, he called law enforcement for assistance. She retaliated by accusing the complainant of secretly videoing her in the bedroom. An investigation yielded no evidence of recording equipment.

Because the woman has no legal standing to remain at the apartment, the man issued a trespassing warning. Asked if she needed assistance to relocate, the woman declined and said she would make her own arrangements.
