For the first time in her high school basketball career, Braden River High junior forward Kelis McGrady is playing without her sister Kamiyah McGrady, who graduated after last season. Being without her hoops' inspiration hasn't slowed Kelis McGrady's roll. She is averaging 13.5 points, 11 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game, as of Dec. 10. She led the Pirates in scoring, rebounding and blocking as a sophomore. McGrady is the East County Athlete of the Week.

When and why did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball when I was around 7 years old, because of my sister. I wanted to be like her.

What's driven you to stick with the sport after all these years?

The friendship and the lessons the sport has taught me, on and off the court. It's shaped me into the person I am today.

What has been the highlight of your career so far and why was it memorable?

When I got to play with my sister for her last two years of high school. Now she goes to Tallahassee State.

What are your goals for this season with Braden River?

(My goal is) just to be the best player I can be for my team and to help lead us as far as we can go. Also, to get better ball-handling skills.

The Pirates are 7-1, as of Dec. 10, so what's the reason behind that success?

Because of the bond and the connection we have as a team. We connect with each other at school, outside of school, outside of basketball... most importantly, (our success is) because of our coaches.

When you're not playing basketball, how do you spend your free time?

I just like to hang out with friends and family and watch TV.

What's one quote or piece of advice that you've always carried with you?

Probably the bible verse Philippians 4:13. It says, "I can do all things through him who strengthens me." It helps me stay motivated.

If you could meet any professional athlete, who would you meet and why?

Flau'jae Johnson, because she's shaped basketball over the years. She not only plays basketball, but she raps, too. She's just a great, amazing player.

If you could go anywhere in the world right now for a dream vacation, where would you go and why?

I would probably pick Hawaii for its amazing sightseeing and its beautiful beaches.

If you could have any superpower, what would you choose and why?

Teleportation. I'd like to not make it to practice late.

What is your favorite meal?

I like Chipotle a lot.

What is your favorite movie or TV show?

Swagger.

Finish this sentence. Kelis McGrady is...

Unselfish.
