YPG hosts second annual spelling bee

Can you spell tenaciously? How about myriad? Cantankerous? Sarasota's young professionals can.

There were several rules to compete in the second annual YPG Spelling Bee on Sept. 20 at Hotel Indigo, but really they all boiled down to one.

"You just have to spell it," the event's host Miss Beneva Fruitville said.

Eight YPG members tested their orthographic knowledge. With words like fulguration (definition: a flash like that of lightning. origin: Latin) and cantankerous (definition: bad-tempered, argumentative, and uncooperative. origin: Anglo-Irish) it wasn't always easy.

Ultimately, Rachel Scheer won the day by besting runner-up Jeff Kattrein at spelling syncope.
