Tricia Yandel, a volunteer at the Lakewood Ranch Humane Society, summed up what goes on at the nonprofit before approximately 80 golfers teed off Oct. 29 in the annual Putts Fore Mutts fundraiser at the Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club.
"We walk them, we feed them and we love them," Yandel said.
Despite getting those key contributions from its volunteers, the Humane Society does need funds to run its program. That's why Putts Fore Mutts is so important.
"This is our major fundraiser of the year," said Treasurer Christine Legge. "It keeps us in business."
But Legge said the golfers don't need to be concerned. They can concentrate on their game, along with plenty of food and beverages that went along with the event.
"It's supposed to be a fun-filled time, and I think the guys and girls here know that," Legge said.
Lakewood Ranch's Jill Wellinger, who was playing in the event, confirmed that thought as she doesn't think that much about pets.
"I am here to play golf with some of my best friends," she said.
