Farha Matin, a sixth-grader at Braden River Middle School, summed up why she loves the STEAM — Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics — Olympics.
“It’s much better than being in class,” Matin said.
While more than 200 students might have felt they were getting out of classes May 10, it was really an extension of class, although more fun.
The STEAM Olympics was somewhat like the style of an “escape room,” said Braden River Middle School language arts teacher Kristina Rosenbaum.
Students received a booklet listing various challenges. For each challenge they completed, they received a number that was used as a combination to a lock.
Tournament challenges included jigsaw puzzles, the construction of a catapult and reproduction of a Celtic knot.
